Whoa! What kind of question is that? There’s only one God! Of course, I’m serving Him.
I often struggle with the false god of chocolate. A pastor friend of mine is struggling with the god of money. Some people jump and cheer for their favorite sports team, but do they cheer and worship their Creator with that same excitement?
Serving false gods is nothing new. The Old Testament Israelites were repeatedly warned not to follow the gods of the peoples around them, yet they fell into the same trap we do.
I’m easily swayed by my sweet chocolate god. (Yes, I know this is pathetic, but it’s true.) As soon as I realize my life is revolving around something other than the one true God, I have a choice to make: do I allow myself to be enticed by the world, or do I cry out to God for help and forgiveness, replacing Him as first in my life?
God often provided the Israelites with a judge, prophet, or godly king to help get them back on the straight and narrow path, worshipping only Him. Today, we have the completed Bible to read and help us grow in wisdom and knowledge of God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ (2 Pt 3:18).
Sadly, I don’t always choose to let go of the sugar addiction and run back to my Savior’s waiting arms. The struggle of good and evil warring within me can make me an irritable person, which is hard on my family. Oh, that I would quit the foolish things of this world that draw my time and attention from God and always serve my Risen Savior with all my heart, soul, strength, and mind! (Dt 6:5).
Praise the Lord, He doesn’t give up on me!
Once again I ask forgiveness for my foolish sins and all the time wasted overeating and then exercising to burn those unnecessary calories. This time could have been well-spent reading the Bible or getting to know an ill neighbor who could use encouragement.
Once again I’m reminded of the great torture Jesus endured during His trial and crucifixion. How many spikes on that whip ripped the flesh off Jesus’ back because of my sins? I cry, “Jesus, I’m so sorry I hurt You.”
Once again my relationship with Him is restored, and the desire to read His Word, worship only Him, and pray continually returns.
Thank you, Father, for Your incredible patience with me. Thank you, Jesus, for taking my place on that cross of shame, so I don’t have to suffer without end in a lake of fire “Where their worm does not die and their fire is not quenched” (Mark 9:44).
Please, let’s drop our false gods that Satan uses to take our time and focus from serving the King of Kings. Please help “Snatch from the fire” (Jude v 23) friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers who are on the wide path that leads to destruction. Please share God’s Truth with them; it is His Truth that will set them free! (John 8:32).
When a blind man wanted healing, he didn’t proclaim sight for himself (Luke 18:35-43). He cried out to Jesus, the Great Physician, to heal him. And the Son of God showed His power by healing that man and many others.
The lame man who sat begging at the temple gate didn’t proclaim healing for himself either (Acts 3). He actually asked Peter and John for money, but they gave him something better! As this man leaped for joy and praised God, Peter told the crowd not to be amazed as if this was by human power. He gave ALL the glory to God and shared the gospel of Jesus Christ.
As Peter told the crowd in Acts 3:19-20, let us also, “Repent therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; and He shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached to you.”
The glory of heaven awaits all who trust in Jesus as the Way, the Truth, and the Life (Jn 14:6); there is horrible hell for those who refuse. Let’s serve the Living God, who right now is preparing a place for those who believe in Him (Jn 14:1-3).
May we love people enough to hold them to the Truth of God’s Word!
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am."
